Abolish Capital Punishment in the United States

This petition had 40 supporters

There are 50 states in the United States of America and 32 of them still allow the Capital Punishment otherwise known as the death penalty. The death penalty uses a lethal injection which contains sodium thiopental, pancuronium bromide, and potassium chloride. The death penalty is a punishment that can be determined for the defendant based on the degree of their crime. However, cases exist in which a person can be wrongly convicted.

Due to mistaken witness, improper evidence, weak lawyers, and unfair trials, injustice can occur. In the year 2014, 18,000 people worldwide were put on the death row, guilty or not. Today Max Soffar is suffering from lung cancer. Since 1980, he has maintained innocent of a robbery that involved the death of three people. There was only one witness that claimed to see suspicious behavior, nevertheless no physical evidence supported the claim of the killing.

In a similar story, Anthony Ray Hinton was also wrongly convicted of murdering two fast-food employees. Since 1985, at the age of 29, Hinton was imprisoned even when there was no evidence that was traced to him.  Even without any criminal record, the judge refused to admit a mistake in Hinton’s trial. Hinton was declared “guilty” just on his appearance. In fact, Hinton was 15 miles away from the robbery.  Robberies like the one in Hinton’s case continued to occur throughout the years.  The fact that Hinton was nowhere near the robbery, proves Hinton was in fact innocent, yet witnesses wrongly accused him without any real proof.

This comes to show that no life should be taken away as a punishment because all life is sacred whether the person is good or bad. Killing a murderer is not a justified solution, “An eye for an eye, and the whole world will be blind”. Please sign our petition to send a statement to the United States Congress to abolish the Capital Punishment and truly be part of the change.  We need your help to make a change in our nation! Thank you for your time and consideration.
