End the Slaughter of Protected Wild Animals in Tanzania!

End the Slaughter of Protected Wild Animals in Tanzania!

The issue

Professor Jumanne Maghembe: Your Government recently reinstated hunting licences and concessions to Green Mile Safari Co., a company which the Republic of Tanzania had (until August last year) cancelled all rights and protections of to operate in your country. That decision followed several gross breaches of your nation's Wildlife Conservation Act, as highlighted in the publication of damning video evidence filmed between 2012 and 2014 that clearly showed the wholesale abuse and torture of protected animals and other wildlife by clients and staff of Green Mile. https://player.vimeo.com/external/172846700.hd.mp4?s=ccc0264125e8606290d9949e4653a7768b91ad4c&profile_id=174 Green Mile Safari is majority owned by Awadh Ally Abdallah, a wealthy Tanzanian, and the remaining 48% is owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Butti Al Hamed, a member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family. It mostly caters to wealthy tourists from the United Arab Emirates. However, in June of this year, to the shock of conservationists and U.S. officials, this contemptible organisation was quietly reinstated to operate in Tanzania, just in time for the current "hunting" season. While understanding of the need to grow the Tanzanian economy, news of the reinstatement of Green Mile's activities has already been widely condemned. It has also prompted the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, Mark Childress, to express his Administration's disgust that this company has, once again, been given latitude to operate “after committing a series of very serious violations of the Wildlife Conservation Act.” I ask you to consider the wider implications of allowing Green Mile to operate in Tanzania, an action which in Ambassador Childress' own words “would cause grave damage to our mutual interest in deepening U.S. investment in Tanzania.” Are you prepared to threaten your nation's relationship with the United States, which is scheduled to give Tanzania US$575 million in foreign aid in 2017? Is this worth jeopardising and is it worth the public relations nightmare that will undoubtedly be unleashed on your Government by not only your own citizens but also the eyes of the world, just to allow a select group of would-be "hunters" to torture, run over, and, eventually, shoot protected and vulnerable wildlife within your borders? Professor Maghembe, I urgently request that you petition your Cabinet colleagues to revoke now and refuse the granting of any future hunting licences and concessions to Green Mile Safari Co, particularly in light of Ambassador Childress' concerns and the previous "gross violations" by this company of your nation's Wildlife Conservation Act. To once again allow this company to continue its inhumane and vulgar hunting practices in Tanzania is nothing short of a betrayal of your own citizens' concerns and those of conservationists worldwide. The fate of hundreds of protected wild animals now hangs in the balance.
