For over 3 decades, communities in the southern part Kaduna State, Nigeria (which are predominantly Christian) have witnessed incessant violence that has claimed thousands of innocent lives and displaced many more from their homes and villages. However, in recent months the region has suffered severe attacks that have taken on genocidal proportions. Recent attacks within the period of 21st - 24th July alone, claimed at least 43 lives.

These attacks are being committed by Muslim Fulani herdsmen against people in these predominately Christian parts of Kaduna State. Their ultimate goal is to kill and forcibly displace the over 30 indigenous ethnic groups in southern Kaduna so that they can seize ownership of their lands to use as grazing reserves for their cattle and establish economic and political dominance in the region.

The nature of these attacks has been cruel and premeditated. The Fulani herdsmen have formed a militia that ambush villages and wreak devastation on the community. They have been attacking and killing men, women, and children indiscriminately in their markets, churches, and houses, while looting their possessions and burning down their communities. The elderly, infants, and anyone in between are not spared, not even pregnant women. Besides the killings, people are being kidnapped for ransom, the proceeds from which are used to purchase more arms.  Besides the lootings, killings and kidnappings, crops on the farmlands (which represent the primary source of income for most indigenous people in southern Kaduna) are being targeted by the Fulani herdsmen who have been hacking down crops and allowing their cattle to graze on them leaving entire farms destroyed.

Despite desperate pleas to the government for help, the government has failed to take any meaningful steps to bring security to the region or provide humanitarian relief for the thousands of internally displaced peoples (IDPs) whose homes and farmlands have been destroyed. In 2016, the current Kaduna State Governor, Gov. Nasir El-Rufai, admitted to disbursing money to the Fulani herdsmen in an attempt to stop them from continuing their attacks in southern Kaduna. This has been utterly ineffective in stopping the attacks as we can see today however, many point out that the 2016 transaction means that the Governor is very likely to know who the perpetrators are and can therefore put a stop to their attacks. This makes his lack of proper intervention in the situation all the more serious. Nigeria's Federal Government have been equally ineffective and have mischaracterised the violence in southern Kaduna as "revenge killings". If immediate and decisive action is not taken to halt the attacks and provide relief to those affected, thousands more will continue to die from the attacks and from hunger.

Please sign this petition and in doing so join us in demanding that the United Nations and the International Community give proper attention to this crisis by putting immediate and sustained pressure on the Federal government of Nigeria and the governor of Kaduna State to take proper action to end the genocide occurring in southern Kaduna and conduct a full and thorough investigation into the matter to ensure that justice is fully served for all victims.
