Many Sikh political prisoners are still languishing in Indian jails despite having served their sentences. Sikhs campaigners and ordinary citizens had been arrested, tortured, controversially convicted and sentenced to life in prison under draconian laws like TADA, during the troubled period in Punjab where the state police openly and regularly conducted mass human rights violations.

Having now served more than 25 years in prison, many of these Sikhs should have been released after the standard 14 year term. For some all the official paperwork to allow the release has been completed, but they remain incarcerated like Prof DavinderPal Singh Bhullar. 

Following mass support and campaigns by the people and human rights groups, to secure their release, we are calling on the United Nations and the OHCHR to intervene and investigate India's continued breach of their human rights with their illegal and ongoing detention.
