“Still here”

International signature campaign in support of the appeal of Sheikh Jarrah,

And the civilians of Sheikh Jarrah

For the land theft of Palestinian civilians and their homes, and to end Israeli police violence against the Palestinians

At present, Palestinians in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood, Sheikh Jarrah, are being forcibly evicted. A recent order to evict Palestinian families, has triggered days of protests and threatened the livelihood of Palestinian families. There needs to be a legally binding instrument and action taken by the United Nations to prohibit the police violence and brutality against Palestinian people, along with the injust, forceful eviction of Palestinians from their homes. The police forces’ violent and brutal misuse of their power has endangered and murdered countless Palestinian civilians.

Numerous appeals have been sent to the Israeli government and the defense forces, yet they have taken no action to protect and advocate the rights of the Palestinians. They’re being forcibly thrown away from their land that they have lived generations on, with no form of compensation, being possibly thrown to homelessness. Which is exactly why the United Nations has to step forward and stand for the Palestinians.

The eviction was set to be in May and it is already May... The Israeli supreme court was to set a hearing to finally decide if the evictions ordered by a lower court are upheld, or if the handful of Palestinian families can appeal. Yet, the court has had prolonged their decision for so long, and yet again, postponed the hearing on the eviction. This was supposed to take place Monday, but at the request of the State Attorney, was cancelled. The court is to set a new date within 30 days, and until then, Palestinians and the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah have to stay restless on what may happen to their homes.

“Human right campaigners, say that if the Palestinians lose the court battle, it could set a precedent for dozens of other homes in the area.” (Al Jazeera)

THIS IS AN APPEAL BEING SENT TO THE UNITED NATIONS.

In the same way that has been done before, and conjured a significant response from the UN. Example: In the Hibakusha appeal to the UN, the initial proposers of the appeal had created a petition that conjured up a total of 10.5 million signatures - in support of the call to eliminate nuclear weapons. The first batch of 564,240 signatures collected in August-September 2016 was submitted on October 6 to the Chair of the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee (on disarmament). New signatures were submitted annually.

On October 27, 2016 at that same First Committee, the UN adopted a landmark resolution to launch negotiations in 2017 on a treaty outlawing nuclear weapons, with 123 countries voting in favour.

On June 16, representatives of the Hibakusha personally handed over a total of 2,963,889 signatures from the appeal to the president of the UN Conference, Costa Rican Ambassador Elayne Whyte.

No matter how small your action or deed, the collective whole can make a significant change in the world.

Palestinian land theft MUST BE STOPPED. These are human beings with homes and families and centuries of heritage and history. Injustice and abuse of power has to be stopped. The Palestinian people must stop suffering and this world needs to change that.

Whether it’s as simple as even one single signature.
