Ensure Hon. Job “Saro Wiwa” Sikhala receives a fair trial
The Issue
Honorable Job Sikhala is a member of parliament in Zimbabwe and the Vice National Chairperson of the Movement for Democratic Change led by Advocate Nelson Chamisa. He was detained at Harare Central Police Station and Bikita Remand Prison on trumped up charges related to subverting a constitutionally elected government because of a political speech he made during this past weekend in Bikita, Zimbabwe. He has historically been persecuted through torture and arbitrary arrests on numerous occasions by the Zanu PF-led government which is autocratic and abhors political dissent. In 2003, he was tortured in detention while facing treason charges that are ominously similar to what he is experiencing today. The 2003 treason case was thrown out by Magistrate Caroline Chigumira. The current case must be dismissed with the contempt it deserves. He will be tried at Masvingo High Court on January 27-30, 2020.
