Provide food security to all citizens of India by establishing community kitchens

The Issue

One in ten people in the world go to sleep on an empty stomach daily. One in six people in India suffer from the same fate. India houses a staggering twenty four percent of the worlds undernourished population. The Global Hunger Index 2018 report ranked India at 103 out of 110 qualifying countries. Every single day 7000 children die of malnutrition in India, that is twenty five lakh deaths in a year.

These are just a few facts that show the challenge we face as a country. It is beyond comprehension that having come such a long way in almost every field, our fellow country people, our brothers & sisters don't have access to the most basic of all necessities, they are struggling for mere survival.

This petition hopes to put an to end to this injustice. We are seeking an order or direction from the Honourable Court for establishing community kitchens across the country to combat hunger, malnutrition & starvation and prevent death of persons thereof.

The Right to Food is a Fundamental human right recognized under national and international law. It is interlinked to ones right to life and dignity and requires that food be available, accessible and adequate for everyone without discrimination of inequality.

Community kitchens have now been running successfully in a few states such as Delhi, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttarkhan. These institutions provide cheap or free nutritious food as a service to the general public. they are viewed as a complement to the existing schemes of the Government for combating hunger and malnutrition in India. Tamil Nadu has been leading by example and a case study on Amma Kitchens in the state has seen phenomenal growth both in terms of the number of canteens and the poorest of the poor eating low priced cooked food.  Twenty percent of the sixty five lakh people below the poverty population are fed by the Amma Kitchens in Chennai alone. Additionally, the schemes success in generating employment for poor women slum dwellers has an important implication for inclusive growth.

It is our appeal to both the state and the public of this nation to help take note of this most dire of issues and come together in the implementation of community kitchens managed with the funding from the State as well as funds from Private players in partnership.
