Uniform Protest: Priory School, Lewes.
The Issue
Please Read To The Bottom.
I, along with many other students, particularly female ones, feel uncomfortable and targeted by the current uniform and jewellery policies at our secondary school in Lewes. We believe that these policies are restrictive and do not accommodate our individual preferences or comfort. Many of us would prefer to wear items similar to the uniform rather than being forced into a one-size-fits-all policy.
It is important to know that research has shown that strict uniform policies can negatively impact students' self-expression and individuality, and can be yet another in-school cause of mental disorders such as depression.(source: American Psychological Association). Furthermore, a study conducted by the University of Nevada found that there was no correlation between school uniforms and academic achievement.
The enforcement of jewellery policies also seems unnecessary. While we understand the need for safety precautions in certain practical subjects such as P.E or Science practicals, it feels like an overreach when applied universally across all subjects.
We propose a reform of these policies - allowing for more flexibility in clothing choices within a set guideline which respects both student comfort and school identity. We also wish to change the jewellery policy so it's enforced only during specific practical subjects where safety could be an issue, like P.E and Dance. Possibly science during certain practicals.
Overall, the majority of students in this school are unhappy with the uniform policy. We want change. Students would like to be able to wear leggings instead of trousers, for example. Small changes, not a whole uniform do-over. This is all we ask for.
Teachers can wear almost whatever they want, as long as it isn't inappropriate. They are allowed to dye their hair. Where whatever jewellery & earrings, shoes, colours, and yet at the same time students aren't allowed any of this, told off by those same teachers. This is double standards. And is not fair towards students.
This is not just about clothes or accessories; this is about respecting student autonomy, promoting comfort in learning environments, fostering individuality while maintaining orderliness. Please sign this petition if you support our cause for reforming these restrictive school policies. Thank you, the Students of Priory School, Lewes, appreciate it. (Especially if you are a fellow student.)
What we're asking for:
all jewellery to be allowed. there has been students in trouble for wearing a piece of coloured string as a bracelet. This is not fair.
Able to wear Leggings instead of Trousers. Able to wear Skirts.
I asked 25 students what changes they want, and the most common answers were as follows;
1: no uniform
2:Skirts and leggings
3: able to wear jewellery
4: more piercings allowed and coloured/dyed hair allowed. (for ALL genders)
This petition is phase 1 of the Priory Uniform Movement. Started by Students.
