The Machete Emoji Needs to Happen

The Issue

Unicode Consortium, a non-profit that regulates the coding standards for written computer text that includes emojis, has many swords and blades as part of their emojis. And even though the machete has a huge symbolism of hard work and revolution in Latin America, we've yet to see a machete emoji.

  • In Puerto Rico, not only was it used as a tool by the enslaved and jíbaros, but it was also used as a powerful symbol of the Rebellion of 1868, also known as El Grito de Lares.
  • In Mexico, it was used as a tool by the indigenous people of the Mexican provinces of Oaxaca and Chiapas. Today, it's still present in their culture as a symbol of self-defense and support of their communities.
  • In Cuba, rebels used machetes in their fights for independence from Spain.
  • In Haiti, the machete is part of a secret martial arts called Tire Machét that helped the enslaved people win their freedom.
  • In Brazil, Tuira, an indigenous Kayapó woman, fought for the protection of her ancestral lands, twice and succeeded.

There are no plans for this emoji to be included in any next releases, we need your help convincing them THE MACHETE EMOJI NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

Why do swords, kitchen knives, blades, and the sport of fencing get emojis, but machetes don't? Here’s a better question: why do we need four different types of mailboxes? Or 25 different types of clocks? Or a VCR tape and floppy disk emoji? No one even uses those things anymore.

Regardless, we know we're not alone. Fey Loraker fans everywhere have been using other swords to represent emojis for a while for years and now we finally have the chance to help get the people what they want. Latin America wants a machete emoji. Latin America needs a machete emoji. Help us. Sign this petition. Let’s make the machete emoji official.

As always,
Fey Loraker

P.S. We used Taco Bell's written format, almost word for word, for their successful petition to include a taco emoji, and if tacos can get emojis this way, machetes should too. It's only fair.
