Justice for Sylvester
The death of a 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni Jr, of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos has sparked agitations from Nigerian celebrities, as they demand justice for the child.
Reports had emerged that Oromoni was bullied and beaten by fellow students. The supposed injuries from the beating led to his death, according to a Twitter user who claimed to be the boy’s cousin.
However, in a statement on Wednesday, the school denied all allegations stating that Oromoni was neither bullied nor beaten but only complained of hip pain after playing football.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that the father of the deceased student alleged that the Junior Secondary School 2 pupil died from the injuries he sustained during an assault by colleagues who wanted to initiate him into cultism but the school claimed he died after sustaining an injury during a football match.
The father of the deceased student, Sylvester Oromoni Snr, however, disagreed with the school authorities and fingered five boys whom he said were allegedly involved in the bullying of his son.
Contrary to the school’s statement, the victim’s cousin rolled out photos and video evidence, which corroborates the fact that the child was bullied and beaten; an activity that led to his death.Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of the school, pending the outcome of an investigation into the student’s death.
Sylvester Oromoni Snr has also revealed that a black liquid was found in his son’s stomach during the autopsy on his corpse.
His son, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr was allegedly beaten by fellow students of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos which resulted in his eventual death.
In a live interview streamed on Facebook with The PUNCH, Oromoni Snr stated that the family was told that the pathologist in Warri could not determine what the liquid was until it is taken to Lagos or Abuja.
He said, “According to the person that conducted the autopsy, they found a black liquid in his stomach, but he said the test to know what it was will be carried out by the police in Lagos or Abuja.”
Oromoni Snr had earlier stated that the matter had been reported to the Area Command, Warri, of the Nigeria Police Force while a petition had been submitted to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
He also said the family is waiting on the result of the autopsy carried out.
“We submitted a petition yesterday (Thursday) to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State. We reported to Area Command, Warri first before we submitted the petition in Lagos. No arrest has been made in connection with the gruesome death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, who was a boarding student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, The PUNCH has learnt.
The father also said the teachers, security men, and other officials of the school must explain the death of his son, whose birthday is December 4 (Saturday).
The Lagos State Government on Friday ordered the indefinite closure of the school, pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of Sylvester.
When asked on Friday whether any suspect has been arrested, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Adekunle Ajisebutu, told our correspondent that he was not aware of any arrest.
