Don’t be Mean! behind the Screen: A Petition for Anti-Bullying
The Issue
This petition letter aims to address and eliminate cyberbullying by achieving 200 signatures. Parents, teachers, and other people in the community can help prevent bullying by building a safe environment for everyone and creating a community wide approach to bullying prevention.
Bullying is one of the leading social problems that society faces today. It not only affects the victims, bullies, and bystanders, but also parents, school, and the community. Anyone can be a target of bullying based on race, ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation or other “differences” society considers. Our society has also come a long way with technology but it also became another platform for another form of bullying.
Cyberbullying has always been a concern for both adults and the youth, with many campaigns aimed to stop it. However, due to the new academic system caused by the pandemic, cyberbullying has been more rampant. A lot of our youth have become traumatized, attempt, or even commit suicide due to cyberbullying and threats. This has to be stopped with social media needing to be more controlled, so that these tragedies will be avoided and people can receive the help that they need. Most platforms have features in place to prevent harassment, Facebook and Instagram in particular have the report chat/comment/post feature which blocks whoever sent/posted them as well as reports the account to FB/IG.
However, these features aren’t enough to completely prevent bullying/harassment and so the best way to stop cyberbullying is to have a complete cultural shift on how cyberbullying is viewed, it shouldn’t be seen as a non-issue and rather seen as a valid and real problem that people, especially our youth, face.
