UNH Stop Overcharging for Fall 2020

The Issue

A few weeks ago UNH students were notified that they are not returning to campus after Thanksgiving break- an effort to reduce the spread of Coronavirus in New Hampshire. Even though students will not be using dormitory and meal plan resources for weeks on end, Business Services is charging them as if they will be. For most, that is amounting to thousands of dollars in unnecessary charges. This is a terrible disservice to many students who were struggling to pay bills before the pandemic, but are now even worse-off due to the thousands of jobs lost in our area.

A student reached out to UNH Business Services asking their reasoning behind the unjust charging, and they responded by stating that there is consideration of issuing refunds in October if students make it to Thanksgiving break. Therefore the issue facing students isn't what the refund will consist of after break, but instead calculating the amount of time and resources that are not used before Thanksgiving break if student have to leave campus prematurely.

Business Services should calculate bills accounting for the time students won't be on campus after Thanksgiving break, because as of now, it is one of the very few things we know about the upcoming semester. Again, for so many students, this is an issue of thousands of dollars on the Fall 2020 semester that do not need to charged. If Business Services is already considering refunds in October, then they should follow through with that plan if necessary, but in the mean time, they should recalculate students bills to lighten the economic burden they have imposed on UNH students.

It's about time Business Services actually put the students interest first. By signing this petition, you agree that UNH students deserve to only be charged for the resources they use. With enough signatures, hopefully this can change the lives of thousands of students who are negatively impacted by this economic injustice.
