Undo the 4th and 5th street disaster

Undo the 4th and 5th street disaster
The Issue
The 4th and 5th Street Improvements Pilot Project in Grand Junction aimed to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Key changes include reducing the streets from two lanes to one, adding bike lanes with buffer zones, and modifying parking.
Argument Against the Project:
While intended to improve safety, the project negatively impacts traffic flow, particularly during peak times. The reduction to a single lane on these main streets also leads to congestion, frustrating drivers and pushing traffic onto smaller residential streets not designed for heavy volumes. Additionally, the new lane configuration confuses drivers whether accustomed to the old design or new to the area, increasing the risk of accidents rather than reducing it. Research for this project lacks the perspective of pedestrians regularly crossing against the light on Main Street which shows the danger to pedestrians is not the traffic flow. The modifications also harm businesses relying on efficient vehicle access, as increased traffic delays deter customers. Access to hospitals on the north side of town has become limited. Finally, the project’s will rely in higher maintenance costs. The lanes are incongruent, confusing and poorly laid out. The bicycle lanes are impractical and overall downtown is less accessible and has become unsightly.
