UNC Pembroke is the first American Indian University, founded by American Indians for American Indians. UNC Pembroke is the 3rd oldest school in North Carolina.  UNC Pembroke has a very rich history and is flourishing today, thanks to the vision of our 7 forefathers.

Indians of Robeson County started the university and picked the nickname long before it was open to everyone. The university has used the "Braves" nickname since the 1940s.

Recently, a petition was filed challenging the Braves mascot. We do not support changing the Braves mascot. The Braves symbolizes our culture, UNC Pembroke's history, and its connection to the land and community in which it resides.
