Petition to Include Pass/Fail Option for the Fall 2020 Semester at UNCG

The Issue

The profound effects of the coronavirus has not been lost upon the students here at UNCG. Even as we work through this Fall 2020 semester, even as work to proceed through this semester as best we can, the lackluster efforts by staff and faculty has not gone unnoticed. As students, we have noticed the quite frankly disturbing lack of empathy displayed by staff in regards to the many students who have found this transition to remote and hybrid learning difficult.

It appears to us that the faculty of UNCG has forgotten that its students are still adjusting to life in pandemic. We are still adjusting to the lost of our loved ones. We are still adjusting to life after having had contracted the virus ourselves in too many cases. We are still adjusting to our own decline in mental health due to some of the staff's unemphatic behavior towards their own students. For a university that champions how much they care about their students, we have yet to actually see UNCG take the actions necessary to show their many students that do but there is still time and an opportunity to prove so...

Through the implementation and reinstating of Pass/Fail, UNCG can give their students the opportunity to allow for their grades to actually reflect what they could have done if it was not for the unexpectedness of this pandemic we are still living through. The current grading policies alongside the increased workload of remote and hybrid classes and our professors' indifference to our struggles. We are asking that, for this semester, we see a return for the option to choose whether our classes to Pass/Fail our classes at our discretion per the previous policies instated through the Spring and Summer semesters. As proud UNCG students, we kindly ask for the institution's aid in setting us up for success rather than failure.
