Charles Scott and The Carolina Basketball Museum

Charles Scott and The Carolina Basketball Museum
The Issue
In order to fully understand the history of Carolina basketball, one must be cognizant of the crucial role that race played in the evolution of the game. With this in mind, the Carolina basketball museum on Chapel Hill’s South Campus fails to honestly depict the full story of UNC Basketball.
Guests who tour the museum will see numerous exhibits on exceptional players and historic moments. And yet, it ignores a key individual we should all pay tribute to. Charles Scott, the first African-American basketball player at UNC is nowhere to be found in the museum.
Not only was Scott the Tar Heels' first black player, he was the first to be a star at a major college in the South. Scott was a three-time All-ACC selection, twice a first-team All-American, an Academic All-American and a member of the 1968 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic Team.
Charles Scott deserves his proper display case with an inclusive and complete recount of the impact he left on Carolina. Dean Smith purposefully integrated Carolina Basketball in 1966, leading to the program we all know and love. By dismissing Scott’s legacy, we blind ourselves to the complete history of Carolina Basketball.
This petition serves as a way for people to become informed about this injustice and show their support for the inclusion of Charles Scott in the Carolina Basketball Museum.
