Why this petition matters

Started by Shawn Johns

In 2013, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors banned proposed Gender Neutral Housing options for students on the 16 campuses within UNC System.

Campus housing has a significant impact on the lives of LGBTQ students, and Gender-inclusive housing promotes LGBTQ student safety and success and has been shown to improve the overall campus climate.

The current UNC System housing policy (UNC System Policy 700.8.1) states that its institutions cannot assign members of the opposite sex to the same dorm, suite, or campus-owned apartment, thereby creating uncomfortable and unsafe living situations for members of the transgender community. It also severely hinders how university administrators protect their vulnerable LBGTQ student population and places LBGTQ students at increased risk of bullying, harassment, violence. If students do not have secure housing or feel safe, students will not thrive in school because of a lack of basic needs, and the UNC System must begin taking steps towards making all students feel welcome and safe on their campuses.

This policy directly discriminates against transgender, nonbinary, gender fluid, and gender-nonconforming students who seek on-campus housing as it is based on their sex and not gender. Please support, sign, and spread the news regarding this petition.
