Living in Fairbanks, AK, my friends, family, and I have experienced first-hand how blocking Spotify in our schools within the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) district has impacted our education and everyday lives. Without access to Spotify, students struggle to focus on their schoolwork, and teachers are unable to continue using audiobooks as part of the curriculum. Spotify has long been a platform that not only entertains but also serves educational purposes. Its rich collection of podcasts, audiobooks, and educational playlists provides a unique method for learning that traditional means sometimes fail to offer. In classrooms, audio resources can be crucial for auditory learners and language learners, while music can help reduce stress and improve concentration for many students. Multiple studies, such as those by the Stanford University School of Medicine, show music’s capability to improve cognitive abilities and learning.

Furthermore, teachers in the FNSB district have creatively integrated Spotify into their teaching strategies, allowing students to explore topics and discover new interests through curated playlists and educational content. It's been a significant tool for enhancing both student engagement and comprehension.

The unavailability of such a resource can inadvertently put our district students at a disadvantage compared to other areas where Spotify is accessible. The aim is to ensure all students in FNSB schools benefit from a modern and diverse educational experience.

We urge the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board to reconsider and lift the ban on Spotify, enabling students and teachers alike to take full advantage of this resource for both educational and recreational purposes.
