Unblock Key Biscayne: Postpone Construction on SR 913/Rickenbacker flyover bridges
The Issue
Petition to Postpone Construction on Westbound SR 913/Rickenbacker Causeway Flyover Bridges
Who is Impacted?
This petition is for all residents of Key Biscayne and parents of students attending MAST Academy located at 3979 Rickenbacker Causeway. The recent closure of the westbound SR 913/Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridges on April 14th has had a significant negative impact on our daily lives. Commute times from Key Biscayne to the mainland have increased to a staggering 80-90 minutes, making it nearly impossible to get children to their school on time each morning. This closure also significantly disrupts the lives of residents who work in Miami, causing unnecessary stress and delays. Furthermore, parents of MAST Academy students are facing challenges picking their children up from school due to the extended commute times.
What is at Stake?
The current situation caused by the bridge closure is unsustainable. It creates a major burden on parents, disrupts the education of students, and negatively impacts the overall quality of life for Key Biscayne residents. If no action is taken, these problems will continue for the foreseeable future, causing undue hardship to our community.
Why is Now the Time to Act?
We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action by postponing the construction works on the westbound SR 913/Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridges until June 6, 2024. This aligns perfectly with the summer school vacation, when many Key Biscayne residents typically vacation as well. The resulting decrease in traffic during this 60-day window, which coincides with the Miami authorities' claimed project completion timeframe, would significantly minimize disruption for our community. Postponing construction until then ensures a smoother commute for residents, uninterrupted access to education for students, and avoids the nightmarish traffic scenario we are currently facing. This is the most reasonable course of action to avoid further hardship and ensure a more manageable construction timeline.
