The Issue

I'm a student in the Hastings, MN school district and recently faced an unexpected hurdle when I discovered that our school district has blocked access to AliExpress, my go-to website for purchasing personal gifts. Unlike mainstream shopping sites, AliExpress offers a diverse array of unique items which help me find more meaningful gifts than I could ever find at a local store like Walmart. Specifically, I had planned to buy some special gifts for my cousins in California, gifts that I've carefully selected for their personal tastes. However, due to the current restrictions, I am unable to make these purchases, impacting my ability to celebrate family occasions thoughtfully.

The decision to block AliExpress within our school network is puzzling given there is no significant harm associated with the site. It does not host inappropriate content, nor does it carry reputation-damaging affiliations. As students, we believe in the autonomy to manage our own finances and make purchasing choices that suit our personal needs outside of school hours. By blocking access to AliExpress, the school district is inadvertently limiting our right to make those choices independently.

Furthermore, the educational policies of schools in the Hastings district should support responsible student decision-making rather than impose unwarranted limitations on our internet usage. Accessing a legitimate retail site like AliExpress can teach students valuable financial literacy skills, including budgeting and comparison shopping – essential skills in today’s digital world.

I urge the Hastings school district to review this decision to block AliExpress, keeping in mind the broader implications it holds for students' autonomy and learning opportunities. Please join me in asking the Hastings School Board to reconsider their restrictive policies and ensure students have access to resources that empower their personal growth and independence.
