I was personally affected when the GSG MP40 was banned, a decision that echoed through my life and those of countless others who had come to rely on its use. Not only did this regulation impact my personal catalog of reliable firearms, but it also created a sense of loss among many law abiding enthusiasts who were forced to surrender their cherished possessions.

The GSG MP40, along with its Carbine variant, has a well documented history of being a reliable firearm, and countless responsible owners have utilized it for recreation and collection. This sudden ban did not just disrupt our hobbies, but it also raised serious questions about the justification behind such a move.

Data and statistics do not support the notion that the GSG MP40 poses a significant threat in terms of crime rates or public safety concerns. According to Statistics Canada, firearms like the GSG MP40 are involved in less than 15% of gun related crimes in all of Canada. Instead of targeting responsible owners, measures should focus on addressing the root causes of gun violence, such as better mental health services and improved law enforcement strategies.

Unbanning the GSG MP40 and its Carbine variant does not mean compromising safety, it means restoring the rights of responsible owners who have been unjustly penalized. There are many viable alternatives to an outright ban which could include stricter licensing requirements, mandatory training, and thorough background checks for owners. These solutions provide a balanced approach, ensuring public safety while respecting the rights of individuals.

Firearms that do cause problems in this country mostly consists of illegally imported handguns from countries like the United States of America. Instead of putting these bans out like candy, the government should put in actual measures on the true core of the problem rather than targeting a rifle/pistol that has nearly nothing to do with the actual crime across Canada.

It’s time to re-evaluate and repeal this ban, to support law abiding citizens who responsibly enjoy their firearms and to focus our attention on real threats.
