Living in Albany, IN, brings with it the charm of a friendly community. But for our children and teenagers, these neighborhood streets should also be the safest places to ride, explore, and simply enjoy their youth. Unfortunately, due to the current ban on scooters, bikes, skateboards, and similar modes of transportation on our sidewalks, they are left with no choice but to venture onto busy roads filled with traffic.

This restriction has turned the simple joy of riding and the necessity of safely traveling from one place to another into a daunting task, posing unnecessary risks to our young residents. It's disheartening to see that what are supposed to be leisurely activities now require parents and kids to navigate hazardous road conditions. Busy streets are not inherently conducive to the spontaneous play and exploration that our children deserve, nor are they safe for cycling or skating.

Historically, sidewalks have been places where kids learn to ride, skateboard, and play, all while under the watchful eyes of adults. A 2019 study found that more than 240,000 children are injured annually in bike-related accidents in the U.S., with many of these incidents occurring on roads rather than sidewalks. We owe it to our youth to provide them with a secure environment—sidewalks are crucial to achieving this.

Reinstating the right to use scooters, bikes, and skateboards on sidewalks will not only return safety to our children's daily activities but also encourage a healthier lifestyle. Riding these vehicles fosters physical exercise, social interaction, and environmental consciousness through non-polluting modes of transport.

We propose that Albany, IN, reassess and lift the current prohibition, perhaps implementing clear guidelines and designated areas to ensure pedestrians remain safe. Safety measures such as protective gear mandates, speed limits, and community awareness campaigns can harmonize the interests of all sidewalk users.
