I'm writing this with great concern for all students at Newnan High School because I genuinely believe that students should be allowed to use phones and other personal devices during transition periods and lunch. The current policy limiting access to these devices during school hours can leave students feeling disconnected, and more importantly, unprepared for emergencies.

Imagine a situation where a student needs to contact their parents due to a sudden change in their schedule, or worse, an emergency. Currently, the school rules prohibit us from having fast access to our phones, which means it's harder to reach help or communicate important information swiftly. In today’s world, quick access to information and communication is not just a luxury but a necessity.

Moreover, research supports the idea that when used responsibly, electronic devices can enhance learning and provide opportunities for students to develop crucial skills. A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center found that 95% of teens have access to a smartphone and nearly half say they are online almost constantly, indicating that familiarity and proficiency with these devices are integral to the way students communicate and learn.

We are not asking for unrestricted use of devices but a more reconsidered approach. Allowing us to use them during transition classes and lunch would be a feasible compromise. This would enable us to manage our productivity, stay informed, and have peace of mind knowing we can reach out in emergencies.

Let’s not overlook the importance of preparing students for a technology-driven world. Schools around the country are already adapting by incorporating technology into their daily curriculum and routines. We propose adopting a policy similar to those in place at other progressive institutions, where specific times and areas are designated for device use, under monitored conditions, to ensure no disruption to the learning environment.

We urge the administration at Newnan High School to reconsider this policy for the well-being and preparedness of its students.
