Unban e-bikes for kids in Lakes Of The Four Seasons
The Issue
Imagine being told that one of your favorite ways to get around, see your friends, and enjoy the neighborhood is suddenly not allowed anymore. That is how many kids feel about the ban on e-bikes and e-scooters in Lakes of the Four Seasons. I believe e-bikes and e-scooters should be unbanned because they give kids independence, help families, encourage outdoor activity, and can be used safely with reasonable rules.
One of the biggest reasons to unban e-bikes and e-scooters is that they help kids get around the community. Lakes of the Four Seasons is a large neighborhood with parks, beaches, pools, sports courts, and friends’ houses spread out across many miles. Most kids are too young to drive, and parents are often busy with work or other responsibilities. E-bikes and e-scooters give kids a safe and reliable way to travel without needing a ride every time they want to go somewhere. This allows kids to be more independent while reducing the number of cars on the roads.
Another important reason is that e-bikes and e-scooters encourage kids to spend more time outside. Many adults worry that kids spend too much time on phones, computers, and video games. E-bikes and e-scooters give kids a reason to get outdoors, exercise, and socialize with friends. Instead of sitting inside all day, kids are exploring their community and being active. If we want young people to spend less time staring at screens, we should support activities that get them outside.
Some people argue that e-bikes and e-scooters are dangerous. While safety is important, banning them completely is not the best solution. Cars can be dangerous too, but we do not ban cars—we create rules to make them safer. The same idea should apply to e-bikes and e-scooters. Riders could be required to wear helmets, follow speed limits, and obey traffic rules. Kids who ride recklessly could be punished individually instead of taking away the privilege from everyone. It is unfair to punish responsible riders because of the actions of a small number of people.
The ban also affects responsible families who invested their money in these vehicles. Many parents purchased e-bikes and e-scooters because they believed they were a practical way for their children to travel around the neighborhood. These devices can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It does not seem fair for families to spend that money only to have the vehicles banned from being used in the community.
Most importantly, a community should work with its residents, especially its young people, rather than against them. E-bikes and e-scooters are not just toys. For many kids, they are a way to stay connected with friends, participate in activities, and enjoy the freedom that comes with growing up. Teaching responsibility and enforcing reasonable rules is much more effective than banning something altogether.
