Let off-campus UMass students participate in housing selection

Let off-campus UMass students participate in housing selection
The Issue
For many students, living on campus is an essential part of the college experience. When Covid forced UMass students off campus in 2019, many of us were displaced and suffered as a result of the lack of exposure to campus. In-person classes did not return to campus until Fall 2021. The housing selection process for the 2021-2022 school year prioritized incoming students, whose numbers continually grow every year despite the administrations' knowledge that they cannot sustain the extra housing. Traditionally, housing selection allows those with the most semesters lived on campus to pick their dorms first, so losing this priority resulted in many of us being unable to find a dorm and having to live off campus for the 2021-2022 school year. This situation should have been resolved with the upcoming housing selection process next month, but UMass Residential Life has doubled down and decided that those of us living off-campus will not be allowed to participate in the housing selection until the summer, by which time most dorms will be taken. It is an uncertain fate for those of us that just want to spend our last year on campus, but we are unfortunately being turned away from and ignored by the administration in the name of profits. We are calling on the Residential Life office to stop shunning students who have a right to be on campus and who are forced to live off-campus because of a problem they created. It is grossly negligent and a horrible precedent that will allow UMass to continue getting away with the mistreatment of its students. We ask that you help us make our voice heard by signing this petition and/or by calling the UMass Residential Life Office. They can be reached at 413-545-2100 and are open weekdays 8:30am - 5:00pm. Thank you for your time and consideration, and we hope with your signatures we can successfully be allowed a spot in the dorms, as every student deserves.
