I have created an online petition in hopes that the Ulta Beauty makeup company will pull their Frida Kahlo makeup line set to launch on July 22nd. First, the line of makeup is culturally tone deaf to Kahlo’s ideals and persona as an artist. As a mother, teacher, and Chicana I find the concept offensive to artists and independent women that have had to overcome stereotypes and social and political barriers in order to make a name for themselves. Also, Ulta Beauty has made severe changes to her appearance in the package branding for this line of makeup. They have removed some of her distinct facial features. Proceeds from the selling of this line do not go back to fund any art programs, do not support women, or social causes. I’m asking Ulta to step up and be the model for understanding that a mistake was made on their part and that they will not go forward with the launch.
