Lower the Speed Limit on Glasco Turnpike to Protect Walkers, Cyclists, Pets & Drivers

The Issue

Right now, the 40 mph speed limit on Glasco Turnpike is making this beautiful road a danger to runners, walkers and cyclists. The road is winding and hilly, making it hard to see what's coming. Erosion has left little to less than no shoulder in many stretches, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road, itself and providing no place to avoid speeding cars. And  the road is densely populated with many driveways so cars are entering and exiting frequently, and a number of smaller roads intersecting it.

Drivers regularly exceed the 40 mph limit -- many people have reported coming close to being hit by a car that was flying by at close to 60 mph. And none of us can ever forget the two young people who've lost their lives in separate crashes on Glasco.

We need a lower speed limit (we'd love a return to the original 30 mph limit!) and the enforcement to make it stick. Please join us in asking Ulster County to revisit its decision not to lower the speed limit on Glasco Turnpike and to consider the volume of pedestrians and cyclists as well as the lack of shoulder on this dangerous road.
