ULEZ - Reduce the age historic cars are classified as exempt from 40 to 30 years of age
The Issue
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has approved the expansion of ULEZ zone across all of Greater London from August 2023.
A consultation was held in March and public debate was held before it went to consultation. Whilst we are not opposed to cleaner air for Londoners, historic and classic car owners are being unfairly penalised by the exemption regulations.
A present, other than electric and specific Euro rated engines are exempt from the charge (discussions hint at a revised target of Euro 7 in due course). Historic vehicles are exempt; these are vehicles over 40 years old (i.e. pre 1983 when the expansion takes place).
The UN department of Fèdèration Internationale des Vehicules Anciens defines a historic vehicle as at least 30 years old (i.e. pre 1993 when the ULEZ expansion will take place). It is standard procedure in the rest of Europe to classify a classic/historic vehicle as 30 years or older. In USA, this reduces to 25 years.
Owners of UK vehicles built post 1983 will be unfairly charged the incoming ULEZ charge. Classic cars form a small minority of vehicles on the road (1.4%) These are vehicles that are well taken care of by enthusiasts and present a culturally significant offering.
We will lose classic cars to the scrap heap - VW Golf MKII , Soft-dash Range Rover classics, bulletproof Mercedes W123 and Jaguar XJS to name a few.
Please sign this petition to keep these vehicles on the road. They are rare, significant and should not be scrapped or charged for movement across the capital. We have until August 2023 to bring attention to this matter!
