UKY Chem Department Change
UKY Chem Department Change
Why this petition matters
Im a student at uky in chem 107. I am irritated at the fact we pay so much money to teach ourselves this material and setup for failure. The professors assume we can learn the material with barely any help. The practice exams are nothing like the real exams, basically no reasources that can help a student succeed if they do not have a strong background in chemistry.
If things change then students can actually get more of an education that they succeed in. Many students are going into healthcare or engineering and retake classes due to bad grades so if this changes they can do better, get their moneys worth and have a better mental health. If things stay the same, students mental health will continue to decline and will not get into programs they want due to bad grades. This is an ongoing problem for many students that I have talked to and it is unfair.
Nobody had tried to take action but I had to retake che 105 because I got a D instead of a C. I worked hard, went to the study, did the practice exams and still got a bad grade. Im now in 107 but I feel that the professors do not know how to actually teach and they just tell students the info they need to know for the exam. I was taking the practice exams before the first exam and was getting 27/30, got to the real exam and got a 42% because it was nothing like the practice exams. Im also in che 197 and our peer leader said we were screwed because we hadnt even got to the information that was on the worksheets, which led to cramming in the few last days before the exam. The average on the exam was around a 50 (a failing grade). It kills students mental health and questions their ability when everyone should be capable of getting good grades with the right resources. Higher people in the department (april french, allison soult) are not helpful and act like they do not care. Im paying so much money to get an education but its turning out to be me teaching myself everything. I lost my scholarships and was on academic probation due to my low chem grade. Chem is the one class that majority of grad schools and programs look at if youre going into that, but it has been proven that many students are struggling when the average is failing. Im not saying chem should be an easy class, but I wish that there was more resources or better professors that acted like they care and want their students to succeed. With this being said, every student has so many other classes to focus on and trying to focus on a class that gets nowhere it decreases peoples chances of doing good in school.
