Clothing to Display Labels Declaring Animal and Environmental Impacts

The Issue

People buy clothing without knowing how animals and the environment were affected by the manufacturing process. Examples are:

  • Canada Goose using inhumane traps to catch animals for their fur.
  • Live Angora rabbits having fur ripped out by hand
  • Cotton production depleting vital water resources
  • The use of damaging agrochemicals on crops
  • Clothing dye leaches into and damages the environment
  • Habitats are destroyed to plant more profitable crops
  • Animals are kept in inhumane conditions for their fur and skin
  • Duck and goose down is ripped out of the skin of live animals

As people are about to buy the item of clothing/product, they have no idea how it has been produced. They should at least be made aware if animals and/or the environment have suffered to produce it. A label clearly stating any harmful processes used during manufacture allows the consumer to make an informed choice. This will potentially encourage manufacturers to find alternative more ethical methods or products to sell.

The result will be more ethical clothing production, less animal suffering and less damage to the environment. There may also be a side effect of the CEOs of these companies making fewer millions to add to their personal fortunes.
