Hoarding! Due to the nature of our business we have found that sufferers with low income or on benefits. Cannot afford the clean up team.
Case study: A compulsive hoarder, who received counselling via the G.P was on the way to the first steps of cleaning. Gas safety check was also due. The gas safety check could not be done as the gas man could not gain access to the boiler in the kitchen.
The rubbish was over 6 foot in height. This was relaid back to the council. The sufferer received a 42 day order from environmental health. To clear the premises or they would do it and the person would face eviction. The person could not clear the premises in time and was evicted.
This is a fairly common story!
OCD is recognised as a condition. So like any other condition where is the support and duty of care. Why does someone have to lose their home or in extreme cases their life because they could not afford a team of professional de-clutters/ clean up team.
Most hoarders live in shame and isolation. Not knowing where to start causing more stress and anxiety. Worried they will be judged and misunderstood.
Extreme Hoarding where a person cannot gain access to the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms this is considered a level 4-5. At this level most properties will have some sort internal damages such as damp from leaking or burst water pipes. Mould and some sort of infestation, such as mice, rats and cockroaches. Before it gets to that stage wither it's a council/ Landord/ housing associations. You still have duty of care for the tenant in your property. The clean up should be a joint effort and some sort of funding or part funding and some reasonable pay scheme depending on the sufferers personal circumstances, should be available in the long run so less damage is caused.
The reason we stared this petition because we do care we are normally the last port of call. We support all our clients in this type of cleaning but we are still a business we cannot afford to do a clean for nothing. A lot of hard work goes into a hoard clean. Other resources are needed too. Yet we have seen over the years an increase in the non private sector experiencing these problems. Time to highlight it and make it a Goverment problem not just a personal one!
