UK Embassy to Rescue 100 British Citizens at Sea
The Issue
My sister has been working on a cruise ship since August 2019. She returned home for a 6 week break in January and then set off on again for another 6 months. The cruise commenced in Australia on the 25th February 2020 - on the ship VOYAGER OF THE SEAS operated by “The Royal Caribbean Cruise” company. COVID-19 was believed only to be in Asian countries and spreading into America at the time of departure. It has now since spread all over the world. The cruise ship has been denied entry to dock from countries on their itinerary. Due to this, the ship had to be diverted to New Zealand on the 11th March 2020, this being the last time for some crew members touching land.
The cruise ship docked in Australia on the 18th March 2020, where only passengers and crew members with contracts due to end were allowed to depart.
All cruises have been cancelled since. Cruise staff are to remain on board while the ship is at a stand still, anchored in the ocean miles from Australia.
The Australian government has now directed the captain to move off the Australian waters. The cruise ship is now planning to sail to the Philippines which takes 12-15 days. All crew have been in limited isolation since the 18th March 2020 where all activities and social events have been cancelled but they still had access to colllect their own food at the restaurant. As at 29th March 2020 crew members were informed of 4 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on board the ship. Full lockdown is now in operation as staff are to remain confined in their cabins - one person per cabin. They are to receive their meals at the door and will remain on lockdown until further notice.
We do not know when my sister will be able to touch land again, as they are not gaurnteed to dock in the Philippines but will anchor in their ocean. My sister is not the only one suffering on this ship as their are around 1300 crew members - 100 of them being British.
Our family, as well as the many others who have loved ones on board, are seriously concerned for the well being of those who are now having to endure this traumatic experience all alone, without certantity of coming home.
Please help us to get our loved ones home safe.
