To stop banks from removing overdrafts and closing accounts & leaving people with nothing
The Issue
On Wednesday Starling Bank made the decision to remove my £750 overdraft. My overdraft was removed with out warning, no notification was given at all. They have taken every penny I have and left me £540 over drawn and now charging me for being overdrawn. I’m a single mum, who’s business is shut down due to this virus and living from universal credit, they have left me in the middle of a global pandemic with nothing. I have sent a formal complaint and have been spoken to by head of banking. They will not change their decision but did offer me £35 compensation for not informing me before they did it. Which I can‘t have because they have made me £540 overdrawn so they have just taken it back. Please note the financial ombudsman are involved and are trying to help however everything takes time. I now have to rely on food parcels and food banks to get by. I don’t even know how I will feed my dog or cat. I have sent a very long email to the ceo Anne, but right now at this moment I have nothing.
Three counties radio have been in touch and helping me as much as they can, as has my local MP Nadine Dorries
An over draft facility is financial lending agreed, and banks do a have a right to change their decision to lend to you at anytime however they should not be allowed to not inform you before it’s done and they should not legally be allowed to take benefit money or wages below a certain threshold. This money is for people to live, to eat, to pay bills, when this is removed, more often than not it causes more debts, more charges else where. This leads to more poverty and more people going hungry. This shouldn’t be happening and it needs to be stopped.
I am really shocked and appalled that this practice isn’t illegal (if it isn’t already) and want to do something to make a change, as if it is illegal it’s certainly not being followed. Please please can you take the time to share my petition and sign my petition to stop banks being legally allowed to take benefit money and or earnings below a certain threshold to pay bank charges and fees.
