Remove the Oliver Cromwell statue in St Ives, Cambridge.

The Issue

However you read the history, Oliver Cromwell stands accused of war crimes to this day.  When he arrived upon Irish shores to reinforce the English hold on the country, ethnically cleansing for its own gain, thousands were murdered, including innocent Irish citizens, at least 2000 alone in Wexford Town.

Further to this genocide, Irish land was confiscated and retained for the English purse.  The rest, as they say, is history, well at very least celebratory castings should certainly surely be consigned to history.

But to this day, Cromwell's statue stands proudly in front of the town council building, as the so called 'lord protector of the "Commonwealth".  Standing in front of a building representative of a proudly diverse nation, an ever present reminder of England's long history of the oppression of the very ancestral lands of a great deal of those it now represents.  In fact, statues stand to the memory of Cromwell  all over the UK!

In 2020, although it is right to remember and learn the valuable lessons that history provides, you would expect UK would recognise & move beyond its tyrannical past, especially as it edges ever closer toward its own version of independence.

But while it continues to proudly display its historical genocidal murdering plundering past in bronze & stone for all to see and right outside of the very building representing the interests of its proudly diverse nation, its place in the world will remain forever tinged with contention.
