Why this petition matters

Started by James Linehan

Train prices have increased another 3.8% this year, meaning that since 2010 the average train price has gone up by 48.9%. This is over 3.5 times more than a firefighters wage has increased in the same time period (13.5%).

While many people had the ability to work from home throughout the pandemic, members of the Emergency Services (amongst others) worked tirelessly, took on additional responsibilities and put themselves in more harms way than normal, all whilst still commuting to work every single shift.

The Emergency Services work unsociable hours and public transport is key for many to get to their workplaces. This is more pertinent that ever with the introduction of clean air zones, the distinct lack of parking at ambulance, fire and police stations, hospitals etc. and the push for more of their staff to use public transport.

We are suggesting a railcard for Emergency Service workers, similar to the one that is offered to our Armed Forces and veterans. The HM Forces railcard costs £21 a year and gives the holder 1/3 off rail prices.

We rely on our Emergency Services to look after us in the most challenging and dangerous situations. By creating a railcard like this it is one more way that we can return the favour and look after them.
