Inform women of an increased risk of Placenta Accreta after a caesarean section
The Issue
THIS CAN SAVE LIVES OF WOMEN AND BABIES AND NEEDS TO BE HEARD IN PARLIAMENT URGENTLY.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published guidelines in 2009 that consent forms given to women undergoing caesarean sections include information on the risk of Placenta Accreta in future pregnancies.
This has not been implemented and now 1 in 272 pregnancies result in Placenta Accreta, leading to hysterectomy, reconstructive surgery, hemorrhage, premature births, PTSD and even death of mother and/or baby.
It is imperative that consent forms include information about the risk of Placenta Accreta in order that women are able to make informed decisions about future pregnancies.
This condition was discussed at the 'World patient safety summit in 2018" with Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP present. To reduce mortality and morbidity for women - Nothing has changed since this.
Accreta is fatal for 1 in 14 women
National Accreta Foundation (NAF) and the UK Facebook support group that I run -Women with Accreta. The NAF says incidences of the condition have quadrupled since the 1980s to one in every 272 pregnancies.
"I support and fight for women all over the UK as we should be told – not left to find out about the condition at the same time you're diagnosed with it."
As a survivor of Placenta Percreta in 2015, my sons placenta grew and burst through my womb and searched for a blood supply to cling to. My bladder and cervix ended up being invaded by my sons placenta which gave my son life, it also destroyed mine. After a 9 week hospital stay and life saving surgery I am here today, struggling but strong enough to fight for future women.
This is when I decided to support hundreds of women in the UK and help them get through their own Accreta journey. Finding that 99% had never been warned about Accreta after a c section. I still suffer from PTSD as many other ladies do, so we want change!
I am classed as disabled due to the extreme 3 reconstructive surgeries I have had since. Being left with an untreatable life long condition.
9 ladies and countless babies have died in the last 3 years from Accreta in the UK and many more worldwide.
C sections are necessary for some women, this isn't an anti c section. This is to raise awareness of a horrific, life changing condition that we are supposed to be told about. Please have a look at the comments and see some of the other ladies with the same diagnosis as I.
Consultant Ms Collins said: "There is no doubt that the incidence of abnormally invasive placenta (AIP – also known as placenta accreta spectrum) is increasing worldwide. As the single greatest risk factor for AIP is caesarean delivery, this rise is most likely due to the rapid increase in the number of caesareans.
WHAT IS PLACENTA ACCRETA?
Placenta accreta is a pregnancy condition in which the placenta attaches too deeply into the wall of the uterus. The risk for developing accreta increases with each C-section or uterine surgery. Placenta accreta puts the mother at risk of severe blood loss and other complications. The rates of maternal death, transfusion, prolonged hospital stay and hysterectomy are all increased for women with accreta.
