The Issue

Speeding is becoming an increasing concern on the B1224 through the village of Long Marston. The village currently has a 40MPH speed limit on the main road and a 30MPH limit opposite the school!

This fast stretch of road links the town of Wetherby and A1M directly to the A1237 ring road of York. Over the last decade the volume of vehicles using this route has massively increased. North Yorkshire Police must clearly be aware of speeding issues on this stretch of road as they often place mobile speed cameras around Tinkingfield Lane of Bickerton.

The B1224 cuts the village of Long Marston in half making crossing the road incredibly difficult and dangerous. Statistics from The Royal Society of Prevention of Accidents 2018, states that you have a 91% change of survival when being hit by a vehicle at 30MPH and ONLY 49.9% chance of survival when being hit by a vehicle at 40MPH.

Furthermore, the speed limit outside of school poses fatal risks to our children. Commuters use Angram Road as a cut through to the A64 with little regard to the speed limit or their surroundings.

North Yorkshire County Council have been contacted by Long Marston Primary School and individuals from the village previously highlighting these issues. However, they decline to action these issues until there has been a fatality! How can they justify a fatality when simple preventative measure can be put in place.

Both of the current speed limits need to be addressed immediately by being reduced to safer limits along with traffic calming measures before someone is fatally injured.
