For several nights a year in the first week of November, people across the country choose to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night. They do this by letting off fireworks and building bonfires. These are great evenings and exciting for young children.

HOWEVER, they are not great for the animal lovers among us, in particular, dog owners.

Every year, for more than a couple of days, we have to watch our canine friends suffer as the loud bangs and cracks fill the night air. My dog is currently shaking like a leaf, hiding under a blanket. Panting for breath. Panic filling his eyes. It's not fair that for 10 minutes of entertainment, our dogs should have to suffer for several hours before they can calm down and settle. Many dogs suffer from anxiety already, whether from mistreatment by a previous owner or something as simple as separation angst from their current family leaving for work in the morning.

Fireworks should be restricted to organised and supervised events. By banning the sale of fireworks to the average man living in residential areas, our animals can go back to their normal every day life.

"But its only a few days once a year" will be the cry. But it's not. Fireworks are available all year round from specific outlets. It is however significantly heightened around Bonfire Night. I cannot leave my dog alone in the house on these nights due to his excessive anxiety caused by fireworks.
