Calm the traffic on Barton road

The Issue

As a tight knit community, Newnham residents have come together to discuss the ongoing and worsening problem of the traffic on Barton road, Cambridge.
The main problem, as we perceive it, is the high volume of incredibly large, heavy lorries. The noise level is very, very high. At certain times of day and mostly throughout the night our houses are literally shaking. We have all agreed that over the last few years things have got drastically worse. The pollution caused by these lorries and trucks is so severe that there are residents who have developed asthma Since moving to Barton road and you can see soot covering so many of our neighbour’s fruit trees. The houses are fairly close to the road and the pollution entering our windows (and children’s bedrooms) concerns us greatly.  Barton road is a residential road and there are schools and nurseries just off the road. It is incredibly dangerous for anyone, especially children to try and cross the road to use the cycling lane.
The road is full of potholes, many of which are caused by the lorries having to break quite suddenly when the 50mph zone changes to 30mph (at the beginning of Barton Road) and it is clear that it is a small calibre road, not built to withstand the volume and load it’s currently taking. It is built on clay with many trees around it which are both risks to the road’s strength. The road is actually starting to rise in certain areas.
We propose moving the speed camera outside of the 30 mph zone to slow traffic down before it reaches the residential area, turning the residential part of Barton road into a 20mph zone, and  most importantly, restricting lorries of a certain weight and restricting ALL lorries at certain times of the day/night.
We believe that by doing so road noise will be reduced, road safety will be increased, creating a shift to walking and cycling in the area and we will be supporting the healthy street approach.
