Statues to “Stolperstein” - Remembering the past, without celebrating abusers.
The Issue
Britain has not addressed its own bloody and violent past.
Instead we have statues which celebrate those responsible for the violence.
In Germany “Stolperstein” - gold cobbles with names and dates, regularly remind Germans of places where people were taken to concentration camps.
These somber reminders keep history alive without celebrating violence.
Britain needs something similar if we are to remember our past with clarity, rather than create rose tinted views that invite future abuse.
We propose the following:
Step 1. Take down all statues celebrating slavers and abusers responsible for atrocities both globally and nationally.
Step 2. Melt them down and make them into plaques that instead mark the atrocities committed.
Step 3. Ceremonially place these plaques in locations which profited.
Its true we should remember our history, but we should remember it without celebrating those who’s actions have created generations of pain and suffering.
Instead we should recognise how these abuses benefited us through our public institutions, and sit with the deep discomfort of this legacy injustice.
