Remove Michael Gove as Secretary of State for Justice

The Issue

David Cameron has announced that Michael Gove will be our Secretary of State for Justice.

This position gives him overall responsibility for all victims of crime. Mr Gove will be charge with appointing a Minister for Victims. In 2014 Michael Gove spoke openly and publically AGAINST the move for an Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse.

This opinion went again the wishes of those who had been victim of this crime and was certainly not in the best interests of this crime victim group, or those who are affected by this crime.

It is vital to have a Minister of Justice who is able to make decisions in the best interest of those whom he has been given responsibility for, an indeed the wider public who remain at risk from this crime, at the heart of his decision making.

On the matter of an Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse the following headline was attributed to Mr Gove.

"Home Office 'Child Abuse Cover Up': Michael Gove rules out public inquiry into claims of paedophile politicians at Westminster"

Mr Gove was quoted as saying:

"I think it is important both that we analyse what has happened in the past when a different culture prevailed, but also it is really important that we ensure that those who are keeping children safe now - teachers and social workers - are supported"

It was clear at the time of this quote, that the issues of Child Sexual Abuse were not a problem that involved a time "when a different culture" prevailed. They were ongoing issues that had affected how we protect and care for children and still remain an issue today. That he was unable to see, or accept that the sexual abuse of children is not an historical cultural issue is a great concern. It is also of great concern that he sought to support "teachers and social workers" and made no mention of the children whose lives had and continue to be devastated by this crime. I was one of those children.

The Inquiry is now established and must have the full support of all ministers, who have responsibility for those whom the inquiry affects or involves, if it is to reach the desired outcomes. It is clear Mr Gove has not and does not support this inquiry and as such is therefore unfit for the post of Minister of Justice.
