Electric car sales are currently only around 5% of all UK car sales. At this rate almost all the cars on the road in 2050 will still be fossil-fuelled. That would be crazy but it needn’t be that way.

The public and motor manufacturers and traders both think things need to change. The public are clear that things would change if car tax changes were introduced that balance out the cost differences between fossil-fuelled and their electric equivalents. The price difference is a big cause of the problem.

This petition calls on the Government to bring in such car tax changes as a matter of urgency. There would initially need to be small supplements to fossil-fuelled car purchase costs and significant subsidies to electric vehicle car purchase costs with no overall tax take change. It would then cost the same to purchase an electric car as its fossil-fuelled equivalent. As electric car sales increase, their price will reduce and the tax/subsidy levels can reduce until they are no longer needed.

We will all benefit from this because the cost of not tackling the big contributors to Climate Change will be vast. Fossil fuel car use is a big contributor (with other damaging pollution effects too). And it’s unfair to expect future generations to bear that vast cost.
