Why this petition matters

Started by Phillip Mitchell

Captain Sir Tom Moore raised the nation's spirits in the fight against COVID-19 and an enormous amount of money for the NHS (over £32 million) through his determined challenge to complete 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday.  His positive outlook and 'can-do' attitude were an inspiration to millions during the dark times of the pandemic.

With the sad news today (02/02/2021) that Sir Tom has succumbed to COVID-19 and pneumonia, I would like to propose a lasting tribute to him and his achievements. My petition is for a permanent statue of Sir Tom to be installed on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Millions of people from home and abroad visit Trafalgar Square, and a permanent memorial to Sir Tom on the fourth plinth would be a wonderful tribute not only to him but would also provide a lasting memorial to the thousands of other people who have succumbed to this terrible virus.

I call on the UK Government and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to recognise Sir Tom and the other victims of COVID-19 with this simple gesture. Please give my petition your support.
