UK Gov: Provide for sexual/intimacy needs of those with learning difficulties
The Issue
Like many others, I work with individuals who have learning difficulties and additional needs. Through my years of experience, I've seen first-hand how the area of sexual needs, dating, and relationships is often neglected. We have seen people struggle to masturbate (because no one has shown them how to), or make sexual advances towards their supporter staff. This neglect isn't just a small oversight; it has profound implications on the quality of life, emotional well-being, and happiness of those affected. The lack of visibly structured professional support and counselling tailored for people with learning disabilities to meet their sexual needs creates discomfort and an unsatisfying quality of life.
What we need is a system that will:
1. Show those who are not mentally capable enough to have relationships how to achieve sexual satisfaction using toys or any means the law will provide for;
2. Provide professional guidance for those who can, to date and have meaningful (sexual) relationships;
3. Set up a system where we can explore the services of professional intimacy coaches and an equally robust interagency process where the support staff can cascade what can be cascaded to those they support after it has been established by the professional intimacy coaches.
4. Encourage and fund speed dating events and meet-ups tailored specifically to this category of persons
5. Stop shying away from having this conversation because we need to give EVERYONE an opportunity to truly live fully.
Unless it exists and we do not know about it, the UK's current healthcare system lacks specialized services that cater to these vulnerable populations. People with learning difficulties deserve the same opportunities to explore and nurture meaningful relationships as well as know how to get their “happy endings” just as anyone else. As it stands, they face significant barriers when seeking out romantic relationships or satisfying their sexual urges. These challenges arise not from their conditions but from the lack of support structures.
It is not entirely a rumour that individuals living with learning difficulties and additional needs face isolation and loneliness, which can lead to mental health issues. Moreover, professional guidance and support in matters of the heart can pave the way for more fulfilling lives. In countries like Australia and the New Zealand where similar services have been reportedly implemented, some have seen a positive impact on mental health and social integration, as we can glean from the Netflix programme “Down For Love”.
We call on the UK Government to tailor legislation, safeguarding processes and allocate funding specifically for specialist intimacy and dating coaches and relationships services targeted at individuals with learning difficulties and additional needs. This can be achieved through collaborations with non-profit organizations skilled in these areas or through public health service expansions.
By offering these essential services, we can help foster a more inclusive and supportive environment that champions the rights and well-being of those with learning disabilities. Please, join me in urging the UK Government to take this decisive step for countless individuals who deserve a shot at love, connection, and a happier life.
