UC Los Angeles: Become a Fair Trade University

UCLA prides itself on committing to integrity, excellence, accountability, respect, and service. To see through these promises, UCLA must seek to become a Fair Trade University.

As a Fair Trade University, UCLA will be helping hard-working producers rise up out of poverty. Fair Trade standards ensure environmental preservation, empowerment of women, opportunities for education, health care availability, and economic sustainability for developing communities.

To become a Fair Trade University, UCLA must:
1. Form a Fair Trade Committee.
2. Make Fair Trade products available in university-owned/operated outlets as well as included in service contract wherever possible.
3. Use Fair Trade products at internal university meetings, events hosted by the university and in university offices.
4. Develop a Fair Trade Resolution and Fair Trade Procurement Policy.
5. Commit to Fair Trade education, awareness-raising and growth of the Fair Trade campaign.

Please help us show Chancellor Block that UCLA must start living up to its ethical commitments.

Letter to
UCLA Chancellor Gene Block
As one of the top universities in the world, UCLA is an impressive institution in numerous aspects, such as academics, research, and diversity. In addition, UCLA is the most applied-to university, attracting just as impressive students and faculty.

Bruins pride themselves on living up to UCLA’s distinguished reputation for excellence. Students even make a promise to the school saying, “As a Bruin, I commit myself to the highest ethical standards.” These standards include integrity, excellence, accountability, respect, and service.

In seeing through these commitments, you claim on your website that “one of UCLA's extraordinary assets—and one of which I am especially proud—is our commitment to opportunities for advancement for people from all walks of life.”

In continuing with the ethical traditions and promises UCLA, yourself, and countless students have made, UCLA should take the necessary steps to become a Fair Trade University. It is time to follow through on “our commitment to opportunities for advancement for people from all walks of life.” By supporting Fair Trade, UCLA will be helping hard-working producers rise up out of poverty. Fair Trade standards ensure environmental preservation, empowerment of women, opportunities for education, health care availability, and economic sustainability. These goals are in line with UCLA’s ethical values.

It is time to live up to UCLA’s ethical reputation. It is time to become a True Bruin.
