Demand UCI to acknowledge occupation of Acjachemen land
The Issue
- We demand that UCI recognize its occupation of Acjachemen land:
- The native inhabitants of San Juan Capistrano, all of Orange County, parts of San Diego, Riverside and LA are The Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation.
- In 1769, Conquistador Gaspar de Portola settled in the region
- In 1776, Franciscan Father/Mission Builder and settler Junipero Serra (violent legacy)
- The Gold Rush encouraged an upsurge of settlers
James Irvine, an Irish immigrant/settler, merchant, and realtor, bought 1,000 acres in what is known as Orange County from Spaniard landowners for $1. - California endorsed the genocide of indigenous peoples through multiple laws
- FDR’s Public Works policy jumpstarted several large-scale development projects that functioned as colonizing endeavors of indigenous land,
- Irvine is build on 142-146 ancestral sites of the Acjachemen Nation as ceremonial and living spaces
- UC Irvine itself is built on 86 sacred sites and burial grounds
- Recently, 1990, Acjachemen people had to make a compromise with the Irvine Company in which they were told that either 1 burial site or 5 would be removed to make way for a Toll Road (State Route 261).
- Acjachemen people face and fight desecration on a daily basis.
Settler colonialism is not an event, but an ongoing process and project of extermination. - American Indian Student Association at UCI Irvine Demands That:
- We Demand that UC Irvine establish a Native American Studies Program with a Major and Minor
- We Demand that UCI Hire an American Indian Resource Program Coordinator (AIRP)
- We Demand that UCI Create scholarships for Native students to come to UCI
- We Demand Housing for Native Students at UCI
- We Demand UCI to Construct a Native American Recruitment and Resource Center
- We Demand that UCI Strengthen Relationship with Sherman Indian High School in order to help create a pathway to UCI
- We Demand that UCI Create Programs that bring Native MS/HS/CC Students to UCI
We Demand that UCI hires Native students
- We Demand that UCI Structures programs to bring students from reservations/rancherias out of state to UCI
- We Demand that UCI bring back the UCC-UC Connections
- We Demand that UCI build a commemoration landmark for the Acjachemen Nation
- We Demand that UCI Make an Official Partnership with the Acjachemen Cultural Center
- We Demand that UCI Support the American Indian Student Association
- We Demand that UCI fund cultural events such as the Annual Pow Wow at UCI
