Allow UCD Students to Quickly Return to In-Person Learning
College students have been faced with adversity throughout the entirety of this pandemic and have been continually deprived of proper education and meaningful experiences. UC Davis managed to successfully conduct an in-person quarter this past fall which gave students the opportunity to feel normal again, gaining learning experiences they would have otherwise not had online while maintaining a safe and healthy environment. This proved that UCD is capable of hosting school in person in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we did this by testing students and faculty regularly, wearing masks indoors, as well as having an extremely high vaccination rate. Though we understand that recent spikes in cases within the student body are concerning, it is not ultimately beneficial to prolong online learning for students here. Currently, less than 4.3% of students have tested positive, though this is higher than our previous number- it is still impressively low. Going online completely fails to solve the issue entirely that faces our student body because it neglects the well-being of students and their mental health, detracts academic integrity, creates more distractions for students, and most importantly is not the education we were promised and that we are paying thousands of dollars for. We urge UC Davis to prioritize moving back towards in-person learning as quickly as possible (offering hybrid formats for at-risk or covid positive students) and to not prolong the online period any further. There is no rationale to support why a student who is negative for covid-19 should not be able to learn in person.
