Uber Eats: Pay fair kilometrage to riders! No more exploitation!
El problema
My name is Mario and I’ve been working as a rider at Uber Eats for more than a year. Every day I travel dozens of kilometres delivering orders, investing time and effort in making sure everything arrives in good condition and on time. However, I feel that this company is stealing from the riders.
We often get orders from restaurants that are a long way from where we are and Uber Eats only pays us for the mileage from the restaurant to the pick-up point. Riders earn a base rate to which the kilometres travelled are added. This company takes advantage of the workers by not paying us for the full journey and we have to get them to stop doing this as other companies already do. This work already involves many risks: working on rainy days, in the cold, in extreme heat, in the wind, at night between cars and with little lighting... we cannot tolerate that the wages are so low. In fact, already in 2019, a rider died when he was run over by a rubbish truck on his way to make a delivery. And he didn’t charge more than 4 euros per order.
I ask for something very simple: that all riders working for Uber Eats be paid full kilometrage. That they start charging from the first minute they accept the order and not from the minute they arrive at the restaurant. Nothing would make me happier than to have your support by signing this petition. If this were achieved, riders would have higher wages and we would be closer to the living wage we have been demanding for years. A few days ago it took me 1 hour and 13 minutes to deliver an order and the total profit was 8 euros. If we take the VAT out of this, it would be 6 euros. With prices going through the roof and having to pay the self-employed fee, how are we going to manage to have the minimum to live on?
This proposal is totally reasonable and feasible as other companies already pay full mileage. In addition, Uber Eats improved its turnover by 136% in the first quarter of 2022, with a turnover of around 6.5 billion euros. For them it is an affordable cost, for us, it is improving our quality of life and access to basic rights. If you agree and believe that we have to end this exploitation, sign and share this petition now to achieve it.
If we continue to allow these labour abuses, we will be normalising that companies take advantage of people who need to work and are capable of accepting anything to be able to feed their families and pay for a roof over their heads, no matter how precarious it may be. Let's show that we care about people and their dignity by saying it loud and clear to Uber Eats: Pay fair mileage to riders!
