Ubereats please have some mercy on poor delivery drivers
The issue
On 15 July 2020, Uber eats changed its fare structure that saw its drivers' earnings drop by up to 50 percent. Yes, you read it right up to 50 percent.
Imagine yourself in a situation where your company suddenly decides to cut your pay by half and you are left with no option except to work more hours/drive more kms to make the ends meet. And still, end up earning fewer dollars than before.
How would you feel? Confused because the sales have gone up but your pay has been drastically cut; cheated because you are now putting in more hours for fewer dollars, frustrated because you can't fight the mighty company, and frightened because you don't know how you would foot the rent/mortgage and pay bills.
This is exactly what an average food delivery driver is feeling at the moment. Drivers say online food orders have hit through the roof as most people are working from home because of the novel coronavirus. But their daily take-home has reduced from an average AUD 200 to AUD 120-130 (this doesn't include rego, insurance, petrol, tax, and maintenance cost) for a 12-hour shift. Reduced earnings are now much below the minimum wage stipulated by the Australian Government.
Drivers are feeling exploited and say they have become modern salves. They want to stop driving for the company, but the unemployment rate has already touched a 22-year high in Australia. They are asking why their commission has been reduced when the food orders have gone up and customers continue to pay the same delivery fees.
They want Uber to reinstate its earlier fare structure with immediate effect. They are begging the company to also stop deducting from their tips, which they receive from customers for their extraordinary services, and pay it in full like before.
Please sign this petition to support these drivers, who are one of us, from being pushed into extreme poverty. Only your support can make Ubereats reinstate its earlier pay structure, which is fair and legit.
thank you.
