We, the undersigned, represent thousands of families across this country who have lost loved ones, or who are still battling addiction during this opioid epidemic health crisis. We would like to share our views regarding the recent passage of AHCA in the House of Representatives.

More than 20 million Americans currently have adequate healthcare due to the Affordable Care Act, including millions with substance use disorder and mental health illnesses. Although the ACA was not perfect, it provided help and treatment to many who were not able to get services prior to ACA.

In the face of the opioid overdose and suicide epidemic that annually kills more the 90,000 Americans, we urge access and full continuum of mental health and Substance Use Disorder services, including Medically-Assisted Treatment for SUD and Mental Health illnesses. We also urge you to provide prescription medication insurance coverage that is on par with other medical conditions listed in the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. MHPAEA extends health services at parity with other medical service to millions of Americans in rural areas and low income citizens of our country.

Over 23 million Americans suffer from SUD (CDC) and millions more suffer from mental health illnesses. Repeal of the ACA without guaranteeing adequate treatment will result in certain death for the most venerable segment of our population.

Medicaid expansion has led to significant increases in coverage and treatment for persons with addiction and mental health illnesses. We implore you, as you debate the future AHCA, to keep in mind that your decision will affect millions of Americans suffering from SUD and mental illness who may lose healthcare coverage and/or see a reduction in their benefits.
